My dear followers of Radić,
Croatia has held parliamentary elections, and the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) won a convincing victory. It can form a government on its own, without any coalition partners.
HSS was part of the SDP-led opposition coalition “RESTART”, which was defeated. Under Krešo Beljak, HSS won only two seats instead of the five it expected. Beljak said he would resign at the next meeting of the party presidency; he was deeply disappointed with the result and openly took responsibility for the heavy defeat. The presidency will now have to decide which way the party goes from here.
From where we sit in Canada, it seems that since taking over the party, Krešo Beljak’s undemocratic style has driven away some of the old Radić faithful, and that showed in the result. What becomes of the party now depends on rebuilding it with a new program and new leadership.
Here in Canada there is nothing new. This COVID plague that has the whole world in its grip has put a stop to all our gatherings and social events, and as things stand today there is no end in sight. We will have to learn to live with this scourge. Because of the coronavirus, we were not even able to hold the annual meeting of the Main Committee.
Our honorary president, Đuro Palaić, has suffered a minor stroke. We wish him a speedy recovery.
Stay healthy and cheerful, and I leave you with our traditional greeting:
VJERA U BOGA I SELJAČKA SLOGA!
Yours,
Ivan Vukelić, President
