Karlo Miklić, a model follower of Radić and a great Croat, has died.
Karlo’s journey as an emigrant worker, the same journey all of us have made, was neither easy nor comfortable. It began in 1958, when he arrived in Canada with his wife Anka and their two young children. Like so many, he left home to put bread on the table, yet he was willing and ready to meet every challenge of a new and foreign world. Speaking no English, he took on life in a strange land far from where he was born. A skilled and hard-working carpenter, he found work, and his honest, expert workmanship won him the high regard of the Croats of Calgary.
When a branch of the Croatian Peasant Party was formed in 1959, Karlo joined HSS, and he remained a member until he died. He took part in renovating the old Croatian Home and building the new one, as well as in building the Croatian church in Calgary, which was a particular source of pride for him. Within the branch he served in every position from president to treasurer, and he proved excellent at the work. Together with Anka, he helped organize the social life of the Croatian Home. His was a life filled with sincere love of his homeland and with the teachings of the Radić brothers.
Dear Karlo, you leave us grieving, but we will keep the memory of you as a great patriot and a true Croat.
On behalf of the Croatian Home and all of its members in Calgary, and on behalf of every HSS member in Canada, I offer our deep and heartfelt sympathy to your wife Anka, to your sons Zlatko and Vlado, and to your grandchildren.
May the Canadian soil lie lightly on you. Rest in the peace of God!
